Berlin and Munich Rise Up Start-Up Rankings

Germany’s largest metropolis and the capital of Bavaria have moved up in the annual Startup Blink List of the world’s top cities for fledgling companies. Berlin rose one spot to number eleven while Munich climbed five to reach thirty-fourth place.

The German Start-Up Association said that 501 start-ups were founded in Berlin last year, more than in any other German city. “The Berlin startup ecosystem is one of the leading European hubs and has ranked in the top 15 globally since the first publication of the Global Startup Ecosystem Index,” Berlin Senator for Economics, Energy, and Public Enterprises Franziska Giffey told Startup Blink. “As Germany’s leading ecosystem Berlin proudly presents itself as a city of impact startups, a city of talents, a city of enablement, a city of diversity, and a city of cooperation.”

In the national rankings, Germany dropped a spot to number seven but remains very close to numbers five and six, Sweden and Singapore, and remains the top country in the Eurozone in front of eighth-placed France. The Startup Blink top four are the US, the UK, Israel and Canada.

“Last year was one of unique challenges for many places in the world, including Germany, so it’s good news that Germany basically maintained its position as one of the world's top start-up locations,” said Germany Trade & Invest CEO Robert Hermann after the report was released. “We're very pleased that more and more international entrepreneurs are recognizing the advantages of places like Berlin, Munich and the Rhine-Neckar region.”
