Germany's energy sector is a key player in Europe and the world. Major companies including E.ON, EnBW, and RWE dominate the domestic market. However, the sector has seen substantial growth and new market entrants – particularly in renewable energy with around 387,700 people employed in the sector in 2022. Government policy, economic incentives and strong public awareness have driven the shift towards sustainable electricity sources. Buildings and industry have now become the focus of attention with the decarbonization of heating and industrial processes through technologies including heat pumps, heat networks and hydrogen.

Industry Sectors

Germany excels in aviation, space exploration, drones, VTOL aircraft, electric flying, and unmanned aerial vehicles. Innovations drive progress in passenger planes, satellites, and efficient urban mobility solutions.

Photovoltaic

Germany has significantly expanded its photovoltaic capacity, surpassing 92 GW in 2024. A key trend is the rise of balcony power stations, with over 267,000 units installed in 2023. These small, plug-in PV systems enable urban residents to generate their own electricity, contributing to the national grid and providing energy savings.

Wind Energy

Germany has significantly expanded its wind energy capacity – reaching over 71 GW in 2024. Wind energy now accounts for more than a quarter of the country's electricity generation. This growth includes both onshore and offshore installations, with a notable increase in repowering older turbines in recent years.
