CEMEX is teaming up with Berlin waste removal on the project. It has formed a new company, ALCE Biokohle, and is building a plant that will use biochar to produce cement.
The goal of the facility is to lower carbon emissions. CEMEX plans to start operations there in late 2026.
“Germany is an important business location for this globally operating Mexican construction company,” said Mexico’s ambassador to Germany, Francisco Quiroga, on a visit to the site. “In particular, Germany's largest cement plant as a flagship for decarbonization will play an important role in the company achieving its climate goals.”
“An important contribution is being made here to Brandenburg’s economic strength,” added Dietmar Woidke, the state premier of the regional state of Brandenburg, where Rüdersdorf is located. “At the same time, company leadership is sight of the energy efficiency and CO2 reduction needed for the future. That’s the right mix.”
