Germany’s Wind Energy Industry - Opportunities in a Sustainable Business Environment

Germany’s wind energy industry is one of the world's largest and is at the forefront of technological development.

Germany's long mechanical and electronic engineering tradition is the backbone underpinning its current strong position. The country’s central position makes it an ideal location for European onshore and offshore markets alike. Excellent investment opportunities have led wind energy companies from around the world to base their operations in Germany.

The Wind Industry in Germany Market Numbers

The wind energy industry is playing a key role in Germany's energy transition. In 2021, wind energy was again responsible for the largest share of domestic electricity production.

  • Germany is Europe’s leading wind energy market with more than 63 GW of total capacity.
  • The country’s wind energy sector employs around 135,000 people.
  • Repowering share in new onshore installation amounted to 13 percent in 2021.
  • In 2021 wind energy had a total share of about 23 percent (net) in the German electricity production.

Germany’s Ambitious Wind Energy Targets

Germany’s new coalition government has announced ambitious wind energy expansion targets that will be supported by accelerated construction of on- and offshore wind turbines at new sites.

Offshore wind energy capacity will be increased to at least 30 GW in 2030, 40 GW in 2035 and 70 GW in 2045. Installed onshore wind power needs to be nearly doubled to 100 GW by 2030 in order to meet the coalition agreement targets

A new onshore wind power act will be introduced to speed up the wind energy expansion process and remove existing restrictions to wind power sites. As such, the new act identifies the need to reserve two percent of land territory purely for wind energy purposes.

Physical Infrastructure Supporting Wind Industry Developments

Germany's infrastructure excellence is confirmed by a number of recent studies including investor surveys conducted by AmCham and Ernst & Young's annual Standort Deutschland ("Location Germany") report.

The 2018 “Logistics Performance Index“ of the World Bank ranked Germany first worldwide overall and for infrastructure; singling out Germany's extensive and efficient infrastructure for highly efficient transportation of goods and passengers for special praise.

In terms of the offshore wind industry's unique logistic requirements, Germany offers attractive and purposefully developed quayside or quayside near sites at competitive prices - ready to serve the demands of the northern European offshore markets.
