Drone Food Delivery Tests Underway in Germany

The Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences and start-up Wingcopter are bringing food to out-of-the-way residents of a western German town.

Under the pilot program, people on the outskirts of Michelstadt in the regional state of Hessen can now get goods like milk, eggs, fruit and vegetables delivered via electric Wingcopter drones. The project, known as LieferMichel, is supported by the German Ministry for Digital and Transport.

The drones land outside the areas and are brought to customers with electric cargo bikes supplied by local bike manufacturer Riese & Müller. Supermarket chain Rewe is also participating in the project.

“We are very proud to be testing out LieferMichel, the first drone delivery system for food and everyday consumables in Germany,” said Wingcopter CEO Tom Plümmer. “Our biggest goal is to gain experience and, together with residents, to create an environmentally friendly and efficient service that improves the lives of rural populations.”
