German Government Initiates Raw Materials Fund

The fund aims to support projects to ensure that Germany and the European Union have sufficient long-term access to critical raw materials.

The new fund applies only to strategical essential substances as laid out in the European Commission’s Critical Raw Materials Act, which took effect this year.

The fund will be administered by Germany’s state economic investment bank, the KfW. As a rule, projects will be eligible for EUR 50 to 150 million in support.

“With the Raw Materials Fund, the German government intends to strengthen the resilience of the German and European economies by making us less dependent on individual raw material exporters,” said Franziska Brantner, parliamentary state secretary in the Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, in a statement. “In particular, it will help projects in the early stage of financing. In return, the projects will ensure that businesses in Germany and the EU are provided with raw materials.”
