Commercial R&D Investments in Germany Rising
Nowhere in the EU do companies invest more in research and development than in Germany, a new survey finds.

EUR 82 billion – that’s how much companies in Germany invested in R&D in 2022, according to Eurostat and Association of German Foundations.
By comparison, the private sector in France spent EUR 36 billion and the EU-27 as a whole EUR 233 billion over the same period.
The German expenditures represented an increase of eight percent over the previous year. The European average was 6.8 percent.
Sums spent on information technology research rose by 15 percent. In terms of companies, carmaker Volkswagen led the way, with recent investments of almost EUR 19 billion, according to data from the Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research in Mannheim. Business newspaper Handelsblatt lists 15 German companies that invested one billion euros or more in 2022.
