2023 German App Sales Predicted to Top EUR 2 Billion
German digital industry association Bitkom says that turnover in the sector will likely come in at EUR 2.2 billion this year.

The latest forecast by Bitkom, based on figures from the marketing research organization research2guidance, reflects the effects of coronavirus accelerating smart phone and tablet app usage in Germany.
Turnover is down noticeably from the record-setting year of 2021 when the sector was worth just over EUR 3 billion. But it is up 37 percent over the final pre-corona year of 2019, when it amounted to EUR 1.6 billion.
72 percent of this revenue was generated by fees charged for consumers to use special features in otherwise free apps. 23 percent came from advertising, and only five percent from apps solely available for a fee.
“A billion-euro ecosystem has established itself around smart phones in Germany,” said Bitkom CEO Bernhard Rohleder in a statement. “Apps play a central decisive role in it. After the record high of the corona years, consumer expenditures for apps have decreased but remain well above the years before the pandemic. We expect the app market to develop positively in the long term.”
