Germans Increasingly Using Smart Home Apps
A study by Germany’s digital industry association Bitkom has identified rapidly growing interest in domestic apps in Europe’s largest economy.

A representative survey of almost 1200 Germans found that 46 percent already use at least one smart-home app. The average number of apps employed by users was seven.
A further eleven percent of those asked said they planned to start using smart-home apps this year. Since 2018, usage of the digital tools has risen from a mere 26 percent.
78 percent of users did so for reasons of convenience and quality of life, while 69 percent each said they wanted to save energy and make their homes more secure.
The most popular apps focus on more efficient use of energy, with 41 percent of those surveyed using lighting apps, 36 percent heating apps and 31 smart electrical outlets. 21 percent of respondents employed smart apps for video surveillance of their homes. And roombas and robot lawn mowers led the way in the rubric “Home and Garden” with 26 and 18 percent respectively.
