Google Opens Its First Cloud Data Center in Germany
The US information technology giant has established its first cloud computing center in the city of Hanau in Europe’s largest economy.

The project in Hanau is part of a more than EUR 1 billion investment program by Google’s parent company Alphabet that will continue until 2030. The larger initiative also includes new cloud infrastructure in the German capital Berlin and the surrounding regional state of Brandenburg.
Hanau is located in the Rhine-Main region, a national hub for data centers, and is only 20 kilometers from the Deutsche Commercial Internet Exchange point in Frankfurt, one of the largest in the world. Planned customers include Lufthansa and Commerzbank.
Google says it will try to minimize the climate footprint of the new cloud computing center. It will run on renewably produced electricity wherever possible, and waste heat generated will be put to good use.
