Munich Now Ranked Germany’s Smartest City

The Bavarian capital overtook Hamburg in digital industry association Bitkom’s annual Smart City Index.

Munich earned 84.5 points out of a possible 100 in the fifth annual Bitkom survey. That beat out four-time leader Hamburg, which finished with 83.9 points. Cologne was third on the list with 83.2 points.

The index took into account 12,717 data points for all 81 cities examined. The five main areas looked at were administration, ICT, energy and environment, mobility, and society and education. Munich’s particular strengths were in government administration, ICT and education.

Bitkom stressed that, ranking aside, the index showed how much progress in digitalization was being made across Germany.

“Among the top 10 are not only metropolises like Munich and Hamburg, but smaller university cities like Aachen, Osnabrück and Ulm,” said Bitkom President Ralf Wintergerst. “This again demonstrates that you don’t have to be big to be smart. More important are professional management of digitalization activities and the joint engagement of politics, businesses and the civil society on the ground.”
