Danish-German Wind Energy Project Gets Big EU Subsidy

The European Commission has approved EUR 645 million for the two nations’ Bornholm Energy Island project.

The project, a joint initiative of network operators Energinet ands 50Hertz, aims to connect more than three gigawatts of offshore wind energy to Denmark and Germany by the 2030s. It’s the first project to link electricity connections between the two countries with offshore wind power.

Germany’s Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action said that the project would integrate wind-generated electricity into the grid more efficiently and strengthen Europe’s energy security.

“The European Commission’s subsidy underscored that the Bornholm Energy Island is a pioneering project in cross-border cooperation,” said Minister Robert Habeck in a statement. “Joint projects like this make a significant contribution to a sustainable, secure and affordable energy supply for Germany and the European Union.”
