Germany Continues Transition to Renewable Heating

A government study shows that three-quarters of new German residential buildings employ sustainable heating.

74.7 percent of all residential buildings built in 2022 in Germany are heated at least partially using renewable energy. That’s according to the Federal Statistical Office. The number represents a rise of four percent over 2021.

80.9 percent of duplexes had at least some renewably-powered heating, compared with 77 percent of single family homes and 58.7 of multi-family homes.

61.4 percent used renewables as a primary source of heat. They included ground or air heat pumps, solar, wood, biogas/biomethane and biomass. Heat pumps were installed in more than half of these buildings, with the percentage rising from 50.6 to 57 from 2021 to 2022. Electricity, solar and wood were the most frequent secondary heating sources.

Conversely only 28 percent of newly constructed buildigns last year used natural gas as their primary source of heating. In 2015, that figure was 51.5 percent, and in 2021, 34.3 percent.
