The money will be paid out to large industrial and medium-sized companies that have converted to carbon-neutral forms of production. Sectors involved include glass and ceramics, paper and pulp, and chemicals.
The aim is to save 17 million tons of carbon emissions. It is expected that not all the EUR 2.8 billion allocated will be needed.
“Germany is an international pioneer,” said German Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Robert Habeck. “We are the first member of the European Union to use climate-protection contracts to efficiently encourage and drive the decarbonization of industry. The climate-protection contracts give companies what they need most in times of transformation and in a difficult economic environment: security to plan investments.”
