World’s Largest EV Charging Station Opens in Germany
The town of Merklingen in southern Germany has set a new record for the number of electric vehicles that can be repowered at a single installation – and it’s solar powered.

The Merklingen facility features 259 enclosed charging points for 259 EVs. That’s more than anywhere else in the world, say operators.
The electricity is produced by a gigantic photovoltaic unit spread over the charging points like a carport. Excess electricity generated is fed into the grid. The facility cost five million euros.
There were slightly below 58.000 public EV charging stations in Germany as of July 2023. The government wants to see one million stations by 2030 and has offered hundreds of millions of euros in state support for public and private facilities.
