Business Case: Leuna Chemical Complex

The Leuna Chemical Complex can look back on more than a century-long tradition of chemicals production. Today, the InfraLeuna-managed site rightly enjoys a reputation as one of the world’s top addresses for modern chemicals production. Over 100 on-site companies produce 12 million metric tons of goods at the complex every year. The Hydrogen Lab Leuna is helping realize new green hydrogen production and e-fuel projects, while pioneering and sustainable chemicals concepts are taking place.

Finnish paper, pulp and timber company UPM is building the world's first biorefinery in Leuna. Biochemicals will be produced from sustainably sourced hardwood at the 220,000 tons next generation biochemicals refinery. These enable a wide range of applications, including textiles, plastics, rubber, cosmetics and medicines, and significantly reduce both the consumption of fossil raw materials and CO2 emissions.

As part of a region in transformation, proactive location development is seeing the development and creation of new platforms including the Center for the Transformation of Chemistry, the BioEconomy cluster hub, and the Technology Platform Power-to-Liquid-Fuels being built by the German Aerospace Center to develop power-to-liquid fuels on an industrial scale.
