Study Says Digitalization Key to Decarbonization
Research commissioned by Germany’s digital industry association Bitkom envisions savings of more than 70 million tons of CO2 through technology.

The study, entitled “Climate Effects of Digitalization,” found that Germany could reduce its annual carbon dioxide emissions by 73 million tons if it accelerated its digital transformation.
The German government has made digitalization and decarbonization two of its main priorities. Europe’s largest economy has targeted cuts of 65 percent to 1990 CO2 levels by the end of this decade.
“Digitalization can account for almost a quarter of Germany’s self-determined climate goals by 2030," said Bitkom Vice-President Christina Raab when the study was released. “With digitalization, we have a powerful lever to noticeably lower CO2 emissions. The more ambitiously we pursue the use of digital technologies, the greater the reductions will be.”
