Germany Set to Shatter Record for New Solar Installations
Capacity of newly built photovoltaic (PV) systems and modules is way up in Europe’s largest economy.

2023 is a stellar year for German solar. That’s the message from new sets of statistics concerning the sector.
The platform energy-charts.info calculates that 7.7 gigawatts of solar power were installed as of August 22, 2023. That’s almost the level of the best entire year ever in Germany, 7.9 GW in 2011.
Meanwhile, the Internationale Economic Forum for Regenerative Energies (IWR), says that 465,000 new PV modules with a capacity of 6.5 GW entered operation in the first six months of 2023.
This was due above all to construction in the southern German regional states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, the western industrial one of North Rhine Westphalia and Brandenburg in Germany’s east.
