Germany Energy Transition
Renewables Provide Nearly 70 Percent of Germany’s Summer Electricity
Sustainably generated power accounted for 69 percent of electricity generated in July, with solar leading the way.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) says that power created from the sun was responsible for 28.4 percent of German-generated electricity. Wind accounted for 21.8 percent, biomass 10.3 percent and water 7.1 percent.
That meant that in July renewables represented well over two-thirds of German electricity. By contrast, coal-generated power declined to 19.6 percent. Germany no longer uses nuclear power.
A comparison with ten years ago shows just how dramatic Germany’s transition to clean electricity is. In July 2014, coal was by far the largest power source at 48 percent. Solar came in at 11.9 percent, wind at only 6.5 percent, and the other renewable sources were also considerably lower than at present.
