Eli Lilly and Co. Starts Work on Huge New Factory
US pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly and Company has broken ground on a massive production facility in western Germany.

The symbolic start of this major expansion of the American firm’s presence in the town of Alzey attracted some of the biggest political names in Germany.
“Eli Lilly’s presence in Alzey is a great signal of the attractiveness of Germany as a pharma and business location,” said German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. “Pharma and biotech are significant in terms of value creation, employment and innovation. With its pharma strategy, the German government is working on further improving conditions of Germany as a health, research and business location. Eli Lilly’s project in Alzey is an example of the success of these efforts.”
In late 2023, Lilly announced that it would invest EUR 2.3 billion euros to dramatically expand its German location. The plant now under construction will focus, among other things, on producing medications and delivery systems to fight diabetes and obesity.
The German government has undertaken a series of reforms to make doing business in the country easier for pharmaceutical and biotech companies. Lilly’s expansion is one of a series of projects in Germany to be announced in recent months.
“We’ve noticed recently that politicians are listening to our arguments more closely and that the pharma sector is once again perceived as a key industry,” Lilly Germany CEO Alexander Horn told business newspaper Wirtschaftswoche.
