Germany Approves Record Number of Wind Energy Turbines

In 2024, German authorities granted permission to construct more than 2400 land-based wind turbines – more than ever before.

The 2405 wind turbines approved last year will have a capacity of 14 gigawatts, said the Federal Association of Wind Energy (BWE) and the industry association VDMA Power Systems.

That represented an increase of 85 percent.

“With this wind energy is expanding its leading role as the most important energy producer in Germany’s electricity mix,” said BWE President Bärbel Heidebroeck in a statement.

Land-based wind turbines generated almost 112 billion kilowatt hours of electricity in 2024, accounting for more than a quarter of the electricity produced in Germany. The associations expect the current capacity of 63.5 GW to rise by 4.8 to 5.3 gigawatts in 2025 – an increase of around 50 percent in comparison with 2024’s installations.
