The initiatives are part of the third stage of the Hy2Infra IPCEI, approved by the EU Commission in mid-February. National and regional German governments are putting EUR 4.6 billion into the projects.
The initiatives focus on the creation of a 1.4 gigawatts of green hydrogen capacity, innovative storage solutions for up to 370 gigawatt hours of hydrogen, up to 2000 kilometers of hydrogen distribution infrastructure and the use of liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) to transport 1800 tons of H2 a year.
“By supporting hydrogen projects we’re taking an important step toward a climate-neutral, sustainable economy in Europe and beyond,” said German Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Robert Habeck in a statement. “A high-performance hydrogen infrastructure is key to decarbonizing industry and the energy sector.”
