The letter of intent was signed at a meeting between the five nations concerned, Switzerland and the European Commission in Rome.
The pipeline will be 3500 kilometers in length and transport more than 163 terawatt hours (TWh) of the hydrogen gas per year. 55 TWh will go to Germany.
“The Southern Hydrogen Corridor is one of the largest and most important renewable energy projects of our time,” said a representative of the German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. “It will enable us to exploit North Africa's immense potential for renewable energies, to advance the hydrogen ramp-up in Germany and to support the EU's climate targets.”
