Germany Shatters Renewable Power Records

April brought a new monthly high for renewable electricity fed into the German grid, and May saw the achievement of a daily solar best mark as well.

Some 22.1 terrawatt hours (TWh) of sustainably generated electricity were fed into the system in Germany from April 1 to April 29. That was according to calculations by utility company E.on. The amount of electricity would be sufficient to supply 8.8 million households for an entire year.

The previous monthly record, set in 2022, was around 21 TWh. E.on said that the main reason for the new high was wind power, which was responsible for around 11.4 TWh of electricity. Solar-generated electricity was “on the whole solid,” accounting for 6.1 TWh from April 1 to April 29, 2024.

“The new renewable energy record in April and the strong performance of solar energy production show that we in Germany ARE on the right track in terms of decarbonization,” said E.on Energie Deutschland CEO Filip Thon in a statement. “With the recently passed solar power legislative package, we expect the expansion of photovoltaics in Germany to become more dynamic still.”

There was an unprecedented daily surge in solar-generated electricity on May 14, 2024. More than 47.1 gigawatts (GW) were fed into the grid around mid-day, according to Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE). That shattered the previous record of 40 GW from 2023.
